Default What is really necessary to split F3 crankcase?

97 CBR 600 F3 w/ 20K that needs 2nd gear replaced. Manuals I've looked at show that the entire engine is dropped, EVERYTHING is removed, then the case is turned upside down and split to get to the gears. I've pulled the engine, removed clutch asssembly, oil cooler, oil pump, shift drum and forks, water pump and and got stuck at the flywheel cause i have the wrong tool to pull it. At this point, I'm really wondering why the cams and head should come off. I'll probably end up following the manual since the steps are better spelled out...but, jeez, I've paranoid that I'll end up contaminating good bearings and my wallet is really feeling a hit from "special tools" , not to mention all the gaskets I'm supposed to replace when everything goes back together. Opinions, insight, anyone. thanks in advance.
