Stuck oil drain bolt
 

It's stuck, stripped, and I need to change the oil. Any suggestions? It won't budge. [:@][>:]

try and dremel the edges of the stripped bolt enough so you can stick a smaller socket in it snug. if that works go and get a new oil drain bolt.

drill a hole straight through the drain plug. stick a screwdriver through the hole and loosen the plug.

Take the fairings off and two words. VICE-GRIPS! (yeah then buy a new bolt.)

Yep, you will need to use vise grips you bolt is FUBAR'd anyway so who cares what you do to the bolt, you need a new one anyway.

I got a new bolt and have tried vice grips. All that happens is the vice grips make the bolt rounder. [:@] I also tried a small monkey wrench since it grips better than the vice grips but that didn't work either. The hard part is that I need to raise the bike higher to have better access to the bolt. I have a rear stand and will be getting a front stand this weekend. Hopefully that will give me better clearance. I thought about drilling the bolt but was concerned about having the shaving get inside the oil pan. If I remove the oil pan is there a gasket that needs to be replaced when I put it back on?

yes, you'll need a new gasket if you remove the pan.
as far as drilling...i think he meant dremelling.

cut a line through the center of the bolt like this --- and from there try using a flat head screw driver. but if it's that tight that probably won't work.
so you'll need to make that groove pretty thick but not too thick, then stick a flat metal piece in there and get it far enough out so you have more torque to turnt he bolt with.
taking off the pan will only allow you to see the otherside of the bolt but won't help you to get it out.

the groove method would make the bolt look like this (---) if that makes any sense.

You can use an EZ-out(go here http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/produ...id=00952157000 or your local Sears store). It's a very handy tool to have.

The EZ Out definitely looks like the way to go. I only mentioned removing the oil pan in case any metal shavings went inside so I can remove them. I guess I'll be stopping by Sears after work.

no metal shavings would go in there if you don't drill out the bolt completely. easy out may be your best bet but better have on very strong drill...but also contemplate this...you don't really have enough clearance to get under there unless you get your bike very high up in the air.
