Strange Motorcycle Troubleshooting, Need Help!
Hey guys, I need a lot of help with my bike and I don't really know where to start. I am a new rider and I picked up a used 2000 Honda CBR600 F4, red and silver. The previous owner didn't take very good care of it. The bike was dropped on both sides and it looks like he left the bike out in all sorts of weather without proper care or covering. He sold it to me for a very cheap price though.
Unfortunately, I had some major issues as soon as I started riding it. I stalled the engine on my first try and I couldn't start up the bike anymore. I took it into my local bike shop and they told me it was a blown out fuel pump and the fuel line was severed. After getting everything fixed up, I started getting battery problems. Got that replaced as well. I stalled my engine again after riding it some more, but since then I haven't had any major issues with it.
So here's the situation now. It's been a few months since I last rode my bike. I got my battery recharged and started up the bike, but I can only turn over the bike successfully if I have the choke on. I also noticed smoke coming out from the engine. I believe this may be because some crap got into the bike and it hasnt been fired on in a while, but I don't know.
In any case, is there any way I can fix the ignition issue? I would also like to take the bike apart and give it a good cleaning, but I have absolutely no idea where to start. I have a copy of the repair manual. Any tips will be appreciated!

i cant start the bike up unless i turn the choke on and let it run idle for a bit. once the bike is warmed up, i can ride without the choke on and i can start it up just fine. i find that strange though since i thought the choke was only used for cold weather conditions and it hasnt been that cold in my area.

My friend who bought a 2002 R6 was told by the previous owner that the choke needed to be on when starting the engine after it had been sitting for a few hours or left overnight, then to turn the choke off once the engine had warmed up. When I got my hands on the F2 I figured it served the same purpose.

That's what a choke is for. Starting from cold! I'm not sure what you're concerned about. Starting from cold doesn't mean that just because you don't feel cold the bike should start up without it. Even if you've let her sit around for a couple of hours after it's been run up to full operating temperature you may still need to use the choke to start her up again shutting it off gradually after about 30 seconds of riding. This is quite normal.
As far as cleaning the bike up and getting under the fairings, read the manual and follow the instructions. They're pretty easy to follow. There's also a whole heap of info on various aspects of maintenance on this forum so dig around and you're bound to find what you need to know.
Good luck. Ride safe.
They weren't fuel injected until 2003 if I remember correctly.
My 91 600 f2 was the same way, first start of the day I needed the choke on to get it started and warmed up. I'd leave the choke on until the temperature needle left the bottom white portion of the gauge and from there I could ride it fine.

^What color is the smoke? Does it smoke consistently for as long as you ride it, or only on start up? A little bit of smoke on a cold morning usually isnt a problem at all. The color tells a lot about what is going on though.
Leaving the bike uncovered shouldn't be a problem though. While it may not be the best cosmetically it shouldnt cause any mechanical problems.

the smoke is white. i didnt try riding it because i was afraid of the gas tank blowing up on me or something, so i dont know if its persistent. i will try again this weekend when i attempt to clean it out.
