Default Smell of Gas

Hey All,

Writing from Toronto, Canada.
Just picked up a 2003 CBR600RR with 10,000kms. I've been noticing that I smell like gas after I take the bike for a ride.

Any suggestions to fix this?

Dan

i would not classify this as a problem. all bikes smell like gas. we all have a gas vent tube that expels excess gas in the tank or gas vapor from pressure built up due to heat+etc. unless you see gas droplets from the bike, i wouldny worry about it. sounds normal to me. just check for leakages as a precaution.

yup, especially after filling up, when it's at the tip top, if I fill it up even a tad over the line, and then lean the bike over I will spill some out. Plus without a catalytic converter exhaust smell is common. but I assume you mean unburnt.

I just noticed that there was more to it than the smell. There is gas spitting out of the exhaust pipe after the bike warms up.

Any ideas?

^^ Are you sure it's gas and not water? When the pipes are cool, then you immediately warm them up with hot exhaust, there is bound to be condensation that spits out the tail pipe. I find it almost impossible that you actually have gas spitting out the tailpipe without it massively backfiring or some other major problems.

And yes, on the 03-06 600RR's, I used to smell like exhaust all the time after riding them. The 03-06 models were notorious for emitting unburned hydrocarbons (earlier 1000RR's included). Those then stuck to your jacket or clothes making it smell like rich-exhaust. I found that if you ride with a leather jacket instead of textile, the smell doesn't stick to you as much. I don't have that minor issue with my 07 though.

It was annoying at first, but eventually you got used to it.

Your only supposed to fill it up to just below the neck, otherwise your just over filling it & it runs down the over fill tube (& on to your exhaust pipe)

i have the same problem with my 02 f4ii smell like rich exhaust when im done ridding i though maybe it had something to do with my high mount. but i also were a textile jacket so maybe that is why i smell it. i just feel like i smell too much like gas/exhaust when im done then i should.

Not too sure about the gas consumption. I bought the bike used and the gas consumption has been the same. Although, reading other posts, and taking into consideration many factors, mymileage per tank has been lower than most.
