Default Single loud click when I push ignition CBR300R

Hi all. I'm new to bikes and this is my first bike. I have a 2016 CBR300R. When I hit the ignition button I get one single loud click. I've checked my battery and it's good. Could this be the solenoid/relay by the battery? I'm rather frustrated by this as it happened suddenly. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all and happy riding

Hi and welcome to the forum. The single loud click you're hearing is most likely The relay that you mention. There is usually a 20 or 30A fuse attached to that relay which protects the Starter Motor wires. I would start there. Sometimes it is hidden under a cover.

thanks so much. I did see the switch and the cover you’re talking about. It seems I need to take the battery out to get to it though. So I will try this tomorrow morning and update. I did check the fuse box and those fuses were all good so this is a good help and point in the direction of eliminating possible causes. Again I greatly appreciate it! And thanks for the welcome 😁

Well, I was able to locate a Service Manual online, but I don't know if it covers your particular Year and Model. The wiring diagram for these indicate that there is no fuse protecting the Starter Motor. If the starter motor is not engaging when that large relay energizes, I would check for 12v at the wire going to the Starter Motor.

since your battery is good and you hear a single loud click, i would jump the starter relay with a small metal tool just to check if your starter motor works fine. it will help you to diagnose the problem.

thanks so much. I can’t seem to get the relay out. The wires seem really short and my stubby fingers don’t allow me to dig in. This I can’t check if it’s just a fuse or the entire relay. I can see 2 what looks like steel contacts that I assume screw to the relay where you’ve drawn the arrow. When you say metal tool, can I use a screwdriver to touch both these contacts as they’re really close together? Sorry I’m not mechanically inclines and learning. Do I need to ground anything or can I just use a metal tool to touch these 2 contacts? Secondly I hate being shocked. My biggest peeve in life. Can I expect to have a little shock so I can prepare myself? Thanks again for all the help.

@MrB86 hi. yes you are correct. those are the two contact points ( attached by two allen bolts ).
you can use a screw driver but make sure it doesn't touch motorcycle frame. you only need to touch those two contact points. it will give you a little spark but it won't shock you.

Make sure it's not in gear when you do!

okay going to give it a try shortly and will update. Stupid question I know but the kill switch and ignition obviously need to be set to the on position right?

@IDoDirt ops. yea sorry i forgot to mention it
@MrB86 actually put it in to neutral and you don't even need to turn the ignition key ON. what we do is bypassing relay and circuit path and kind of connecting starter motor directly to the battery. if the starter motor is ok it should spin without problem
