go to your local bike shop and ask about a tank liner kit. it comes in two parts, the first is an acid etch. start by removeing the tank,. remove the petcock and plug everything water tight. pour in the acid, fill rest of the way with water, being careful not to get any on the outside. if you do, dont panic, just wash it off with water and towel it dry. position the tank to let it soak for an hour or two this will loosen the scale after this drain two thirds of the solution from the tank add some small nuts, bolts, washers, etc. this will help remove the rust, seal the tank, slosh the stuff around in the tank untill your arms are tired, take a break, do it again. drain the contents into a plastic container. rinse thouroghly with water and dry. at this point remove the base and cap, if you have some paint thinner use it to rinse any residue out of the tank. once it is completely dry pour in the liner, seal the tank, roll the tank in evey diriction until you are sure you have coated the tank completely. one coat is all that is necesary. unplug and drain excess into bottle, alow to dry for 24hrs . i have done this to old tanks that were nearly rusted through. it works great. good luck.
