replace only the metal part of fuel pump.
Looking at a bike for a friend CBR600RR/ 04, seems the fuel pump is dead, had it out and tested, nothing, he's been quoted silly money on an OEM replacement, it looks to me like the metal pump bit is the same as on most bikes, it's just housed in a load of plastic stuff, is it possible to remove just the pump from the housing and replace that as they are about £15-20, I can't see an easy way of doing it, am I missing something? advice please.

A couple of members here have a write up on the carb, and the fuel pump. The contacts are probably shot, and you need to replace. Look up in the “F3” “STICKY” section. It should point you in the right direction as to what to look for. It might be with the carb write up.

It's a 04 600rr, not an f3. No carbs or contacts, just a high pressure pump.

Try this vid... might help you. May not. Off top of my head I don't remember exactly how your pump looks or is built but as they are all about the same, it might help:
