Harmful effects of Redlining?
 

I was getting on to the highway last night and i dropped a couple gears and gave it some good gas... my front wheel came off the ground from the accelleration and about a moment later imy engine sounded liuke it had reached its limits (it was screaming like it normally would except it was very choppy) i knew that i must have redlined it so i immediately upshifted.

it definately wasnt redlining for more than a second or two i am just wondering how bad this actually is for your engine... im going to be alot more careful when dropping gears from now on i was scared that my bike was just gonna break down after hearing the engine screaming like that

she rode fine the rest of the way home (about 25 miles) and i havent noticed any sounds or issues.

my nissan maxima has a list in its manual that lists the maximum speed you can hit in each gear does anybody know a maximum speed list for the gears on an f3..

any recomendations or tips are welcome as you can probably tell im a new rider

These bikes are actually really resilient but just like the Nissan if you hit it hard it going to crap out on you. Bottom line its going to cost $$$$ to fix.

Don't worry about the horrible things that WILL happen if you redline just get fimaliar with the bike and you'll know when to switch gears before she hits red.

Most the manuals say to switch gears around 6k which is really low but I'll let an F3 owner chime in.

Redlining is not a big deal so long as you don't spend a lot of time there. To rev to the redline and then imediately shift up to the next gear is fine.

I don't believe you'd ever hit these speeds in 5th or 6th since the bike doesn't have enough power. This is based on 15T in front and 43T in rear.

When you hit the revlimiter, it is the bike protecting its self from over reving, so while i wouldn't recommend doing it for long periods of time but short periods of bouncing off the rev limiter shouldnt hurt your bike in any way.

176 on my '06 F4i, although it was probably only 160ish with how the spedo is off but that's what it said to me! Things come up REALLY fast at 170mph, I've never went that fast again.

I'm really amazed at how far off the speedo's are on motorcycles. Most cars are only off by 1 or 2 mph. I usually see bikes off by 6 or even 7 mph with an indicated speed of 85, the GPS says only 78 or 79 mph. I don't know anyone with a newer bike that's put a GPS on their bike and done tripple digits for comparison.

That's true, Bill. My bike is off by about 5mph at 60. (actually 55)
I think it's a sportbike conspiracy.... because my KLR reads right on. :D
