Read this & learn about OIL
I dont know how many of you have seen this before but its beautiful. Written by a rider, it gives you all the basics about oil and how it is refined and marketed in a nutshell. Sample fact: basic straight-weight oil does not wear out. Ever. We change oil because A.) the additives in oil that give us multi-weight viscosity are what breaks down, and B.) carbon particles and combustion byproducts dirty the oil. But a basic single weight oil does not break down with use.
All About Motor Oil BTW: the guy also compares oil filters in a pretty indepth way, comparing motorcycle specific filters to automotive filters you can use on your bike. Includes a bike specific reference chart. I use a Mobil 1 car filter in my bike ..some of you didnt know that was even possible :) |
That was a pretty good read. I only got lost once or twice thanks to the abbreviations and what not but that was extremely informative. Good to know the Shell Rotella I bought is just about as good as you can get as far as oil goes for motorcycles. Now I'll have a new topic to bore my co-workers with tomorrow :)

Yep - most all 600cc Honda motors use the same filters as the Nissan VQ35 motors. Makes it a lot easier to go look up a 350Z in the book when it's time to go buy a new one. |
Yeah a good read, but I've seen a few other articles like same.
I can testify about using oil with additives (like detergent) They will cause clutch slip. I whole heartedly agree about changing your oil sooner than later with the break in period. Although I have been told that with new motors (in some cars anyway) are "Bedded" (run in) before leaving the factory. In the "Old" days, a small amount of graphite was added to the oil in a new motor to bed & polish reciprocating parts & if you didn't change the oil at say 1000 kays (600+mls) you ran the risk of prematurely wearing out your motor. I will always agree with anyone that tells you to change oil often, its the life blood of your motor & relatively cheap insurance |
Holy crap that was alot of info. I got lost. lol

Thank you for summarize the article, guys. That was little too much to read for me.
