Default Power comander and Windows XP

So i've been trying for days now to get my computer to recgonize my power commander IIIr. No luck... windows can't find the necessary drivers, no matter what I do. I've restarted the computer, checked to see it was connected firmly, yada yada yada from all the FAQ's on PC's website.

Now what? How in the eff can I get XP to find the driver?

Isn't the IIIr a serial connection? If so the software would just need to point to COM1 or whichever one the serial is on.
