Might as well go ahead and do all three of them. It's not too hard but it is time consuming. You can do it in a weekend.

Your gonna need a repair manual. It gives you step by step instructions with pics. SELL DOWNLOADS: Stock Photo Sales, Sell MP3s, Sell Software

If you do have to tear into the tranny. Your in luck!!!. 04 was the first year for the side removable cassette style transmission. Its a few bolts and out. You don't have to split the engine case like on a lot of engines. It's no where near a weekend job on that bike.

You can also buy complete used transmissions on ebay. 04-07 should all be the same trans.

That's awesome why couldn't the guys at Honda think about that kinda setup sooner.

HELP!!! i have the tranny lose and ready to come out but i can only pull it about 3/4 of an inch out and it wont come any further. i think its in first gear but started working on it in neutral. i dont know how it got in first but im almost sure it is. does this matter? should i just keep messin with it to finagle it out? once again, i have never had a tranny out of a bike before.

as long as you have everything removed, it should slide out. I don't think it matters if its in gear or not.

Im not sure what manual you have, but here the page from the service manual.

its synchros, and bikes dont have them. those are only for helical cut gears in cars and trucks.

on another note, i just did a trans swap on my 03, had to take the motor out and split the case. the hardest part was putting the motor back in the bike afterwards. BUT the swap did fix my problem and it ended up being worn dogs and gears. where it was obviously supposed to be a straight machined piece was rounded off and just popping the gear back out. just took it for a test ride and all is well, everything works great!
