Oil change

When is it good to do an oil change? I just got a 96 F3 with 22k on it and am wondering when is a good time to do an oil change, and if it is easy enough to do by myself instead of paying outrageous shop prices?

I'd do one straight away, cos you never know. It's easy to do it yourself.
Recommended change intervals are every 12000 km (8000 mls) Changing it more often is better for your bike, less often isn't.

Can I run a full synthetic in that bike? I never got the manual with it and it is alot older than any other bike I have owned.
