Default mysterious coolant leak

Hello,

I need help from anyone who has some knowledge about the coolant system on the '05 600rr.

I discovered the coolant leak after I changed the oil and filter today. I started up and let it run for about 5 minutes, rev'ed up to about 7K rpm, engine temp to 150 degrees. I then noticed coolant was dripping so I cut the engine.

From what I can tell the leak is above the engine block near the front sprocket. Anybody know where the leak can come from? I think there is a mid-size hose from the radiator that runs behind engine but doesn't know where it connects or terminate.

Last month I did a coolant change to Engine Ice, didn't have leak then but after a week I noticed the reserve tank was low. I then refilled to the high mark and now it is low again.

I didn't see any leak after each ride.

Thanks for any help.

Update:

I checked the radiator level today and it's still full to the top.

Started up and let it run for 10 minutes, up to 220 degrees, rev'ed to 7K rpm. No leak this time.

Don't know what to make of this, but I'll have to check the reserve tank more often.

I'll do a pressure test when I have the time.

Chances are that your coolant leak is still there. Maybe it didn't leak this time, or perhaps you didn't see it, but it hasn't just gone away. Pressure testing is quite effective.

It's very common for leaks to pop up around those hose fittings, which just requires the hose clamp to be slightly tightened. I have an '04 1000RR, and I've had to tighten some of the hose clamps down on more than one occasion. Eventually those hoses harden to the point where this no longer works. Then it needs to be replaced. Wouldn't expect that for an '05, but possible. Look for loose hose clamps first.

+1. check the clamps.. they are probably loose.

just a little thing to look at. Check to make sure your overflow tube is coming all the way down by the shifter. If it is pulled up at all, you have just overfilled the coolling system and purged some out of the overflow line. the line is suppose to be in the same group of hoses that are by your shifter, make sure its there.
