Default Installing chain (whats this piece for?)

I'm in the process of putting a new chain & sprockets on my F4i
The chain comes with the rivet master link and I have the right tool for it.
Question is:

There are two "M" shaped pieces in the bag w/ the master link, plates & o-rings. Not sure what that piece is for....

The only thing I can think of is its a spacer so the o-rings don't get crushed during assembly / riveting.

Thoughts?

Thanks for the replies,
Yeh, the ones I have are more like a bent piece of wire in the "M" shape not actual plates.

Ran into another problem:
I'm using the BikeMaster tool

and can't figure out how to press fit the plate onto the rivets.
If anybody has used this tool before please reply. Its steps 3-4 in the instructions but if you follow them, you end up with a bent side plate

what kind of chain did you get that came with those spacers? Where did you get yours dirt? I've never seen these with any of the D.I.D. chains I've replaced.

The chains I have were made by EK Chain. I believe that the one in the tutorial is as well. They make them in several sizes as well as colors. I'm running EK on 3 of my bikes. My wifes has somewhat over 25k miles on it, so we're pretty happy with it.

I got REGINA chain and sprocket set from motorcyclesuperstore.
The messed up thing was that the "rivet" master link that they sent did not have those hollow copper ends. It was just solid steel pins, impossible to properly rivet with regular chain too. So after messing up my brand new chain tool, I went out and got another master link that does have those copper rivet tips.
So I'm all good now. It certainly was an educational experience.

Boris.
