Default Importance of clean air filter!!

So I finally broke out the bike this year. Didn't touch last year at all. So like a year and a half. Battery took a 10 min charge, wasn't far from 0 when first hooked up. Would have probably turned over. So after charging I attempted to start it up. Would turn over but not fire. I checked the fuel filter it was bad, changed it, dealt with some leaks and put more gas in it.

Finally fired up. Ran good, idled fine and would rev up nice. Took it out, first gear fine, 2nd gear fine, halfway through 3rd it bogged down and died. Like it was out of gas.

I went through fuel delivery system, changed the fuel pump contacts. The old ones were almost toast, this being the 2nd set.

No dice, same problem. I take off the carbs and check my floats and jets. Clean. Tried again, same problem.

When I checked the carbs I looked at the air filter, it was dirty but it looked servicable. I mean I've never heard of a dirty air filter causing any problems.

So just to check I removed the air filter, its a K&N by the way, and tried it. Went through all gears fine and ran great.

I cleaned it and oiled it. Tried running it, but it ran rough. I think it needs to dry, other people have had this problem. We will see tomorrow.

But the moral of the story is keep your air filter clean!!

Since running crossers I've always respected how much work the filter does.

Yeah, it was the air filter. Now to deal with an oil leak on the left side. Only when running and it ends up on my boot.

Primary drive oil seal would be my guess
A cautionary from me here, and I'm not suggesting yours is wrong, an over tight chain in my experience can damage a wheel bearing.
It can under certain conditions, also effect the primary drive seal and bearing. This will result in oil pi..ing out. Not good !!
