How to get rid of a salvage title?
My bike has a salaged title 2000 cbr 929.. its a crack under the stator cover in the the engine case. so the guy that had it before me his insurance company totaled it since they would have to replace the whole engine casing and frame. anyway i can have it welding back up good as new. Would that be enough to get the salavage title taken away? anyone know the steps you have to take at the dmv to do it? how much it might cost?
1 good thing about having a salvage bike is you can say you only payed a couple hundred bucks for it so the dmv taxes arent bad.

i don't think there is any way to get a clean title. after the fix, you can have the bike examined and, if it's determined to meet all road-worthy requirements, they can issue you a rebuilt title. i might be wrong but i believe that's the best you are going to get.

And as far as insurance is concerned, they may both be treated the same, but again, that is my guess.
This is why I told myself I wouldn't buy a salvaged bike again, unless it's a great deal.

but with a rebuilt title, you can carry any insurance that you want to. a rebuilt-titled bike is by definition a bike that has been salvaged and built back up to clean title status and there are no problems with insurance with a rebuilt title.
by the way, i went through all this hassle in the past with my last bike.

some insurance companies will not insure a bike with a salvage title and, if they do, usually nothing more than the basic liability. they will not pay money to fix a wrecked bike.

Yeah, I guess it varies by state. Salvaged bikes must be more common in CA. I could have insured my bike full coverage and it was "salvaged". It was just too pricey, perhaps it was my young age 3 years ago, and full coverage is pricey on sport bikes in general.
I guess it's worth a shot if it's not too big a hassle. QuinC, check your local DMV website, or call the DMV office.
