How to fix a warped rotor???

I've got an 01 F4i with slightly warped rotors, nothing too bad, just annoying whenI brake. Is it possible to hammer out the warped part of the rotor? I can't lay the rotor exactly flat on the workbench because of the rivet type things that connect the hub of the rotor to the actual surface area where the brake grabs. Since it wont lay flat due to those rivet things, is is possible to straighten the rotor or do I have to buy new ones? Thanks in advance.

Fixing it (if its fixable) is far cheaper than buying a new one or a used one on Ebay.

Here's one place that does it:

Awesome Link! I also have a rotor issue, and for cheap rotor its still 120each, so if this guy can straighten them it will save a lot of money, just a little advice, you should mic them first just to ensure they are still within specs.

straightening a bent rotor isnt worth the savings IMO. you're bending metal back another direction after it has been bent one way, and in the process weakening it. why risk doing that when you could guarantee safe stopping with new and straight rotors?

I'm with bobthebiker on this one. Fixing fairings and small cosmetic stuff is no biggie, brakes...? I'd buy new rotors.

A warped rotor isn't really a bend. We're only taking a few mils out of true. You're not going to sacrifice the integrity of the material for that small amount.

Anyway, I've had no problems braking from 150+mph at the track.

Thanks for the quick replies and the link, abadfish. I don't want to buy new rotors because they are expenxive and mine are polished. I would hate to have another set re-polished if I can still save these.

this is what i did it worked great!!!

get a old calc book out open up about halfway.. put the rotor in and close the bookl pile a few other books on top and viola when you wake up the next day the rotor is as straight as a gay guy on crack

Was that a joke danny? or are you being serious...sounds suspicious since the books aren't much weight to straighten metal. But I am up for any ideas

Have you ever owned a Calc book??? Those things are like 1400 pages thick and 20+ pounds a piece, haha

a warped rotor is usally caused from high heat, spend the money and upgrade if ur gonna be using at the track. fixing a warped rotor (on the track) its gonna yield bad results. i did the same thing on my car cuz i didnt want to spend the money and ended up messing more than the rotor up. ur bent rotor is an excuse to upgrade to better stuff since the old stuff is broken (at least thats what i tell my wife)

Do you even ride the track (with a bike)????????????????????????????????????????? I have several thousand laps that says othewise. i also know other racers who would disagree with your statement.

A car is not the same as bike.

I agree with fish. Heck, I've even had NEW rotors sent out and straighened becuase the factories idea of allowable t.i.r. is very different from mine.
I've raced on straightened, previousiouly warped rotors for years, and never once had a problem of any kind.

fyi I use frame straight systems, not the cheapest but IMHO the best in the business.

Now if the rotor is actually bent that's a different story.

With an automotive rotor you can take itto a machine shop and they will cut the warp out, we don't have that luxury on bikes [:@]

I've spoken to several Machinists and speciality shops on this issue and most of them say that it would be a temporary fix and that it would probably bend again. AlsoI think everyone here has a different perception of a bent rotor. A couple thou is nothing and should be straightend fine. If its out a 1/4 inch find different rotors because you will be wasting your time fixing a floating disc.

I think we all agree if the rotor is bent it MUST be replaced, but if it slightly warped it is much more cost effective to have them fixed. ;)
