How do I paint.....
Am just about to paint my nose fairing on my f4.
I have recently done the front fender and I never used plastic primer just went straight to high build primer. What I was thinking of is plastic prime ring first this time then going to prime it with high build or just a standard primer from upol. Does anybody have any input or suggestions. |
I'm not a paint guy, but one thing that Ive learned from messing with composites and others who do their own paint is that the more effort and prep work, the better its going to come out.

Very true I reakon I'll give it a go see how it turns out.

If it has lots of stone chips and stuff then use a high build primer, but if it looks smooth after first prime and rub then shoot away.

If you use a high level of thinners in your paint watch out for melting the plastics........
(I moved your thread here - How to section is for HOW TO DO not "How do I do" :) |
Standard Filler Primer will be sufficient.
Sand your fairing, when I say this use your own judgement. If there are deep chips in the paint then try to feather the paint edge down as much as possible but you don't need to sand through the paint and primer already on the fairing to reach the fiberglass. Once the fairing is sanded, prime the entire fairing. Once dry, sand the primer to look for low spots (chips that you were trying to fill). The sanded primer will be a lighter color and the untouched primer in the low spot will still be the darker/dry color. If there are still low spots, use the filler primer once again (assuming the low spots are from chips and don't need body filler, Bondo) sand and look for low spots again. If there are no low spots clean the fairing of dust and dirt and spray your base coat then clear. I'm assuming the fairing is in good condition with no big blemishes, therefore I don't see you needing to prime the fairing more than twice if there are chips in the paint. Hope that gives you some insight. Best of luck! |
