Header Bolt Help
I was removing the nuts for my headers and one of the header boltscame out with the nut attached to it. Apparently the nut has cross-threaded itself onto the bolt, so the bolt came out with the nut in one piece. I tried to separate the two but nothing worked. I'm going to take it to the shop tomorrow and take the torch to it see if I can get them to separate. If not, then I have to go to the dealer to pick up the bolt. Stupid question, but how do I install a new header bolt? They're threaded on both ends. Also, should I apply thread locker or something on it as well? Thanks for your help!

RE: Header Bolt Help
you will need a new stud and nut-loctite the newstud when installing
-it should thread in easy-if not-double-nut it(use 2 plain nuts, non locking,)tighten one against the other and then tighten the outer one-it will go in as tight as you want it to. pm me if you need any assistance-went thru the same thing on my 54 o8 |
RE: Header Bolt Help
Wow! Thanks for the speedy response and all your help! I'm going to see if I can get it off tomorrow and if not then I'll call the dealer on Tuesday. I'll let you know how it turns out.

RE: Header Bolt Help
don't use heat...expands metal making it harder to remove!
outsider has a great tip with the double nut deal. it's really no biggy, just thread the stud back in. |
RE: Header Bolt Help
Yeah...I've reused them that way a number of times...its no big deal. The stud is just better if you are going to be taking it on and off numerous times...aluminum threads will fatigue in such use.
I have a few that were bent that I replaced on the most recent motor aquisition...the studsare like $3 a piece...I think I have an extra stud..? Adouble nut, screw it in with locktite adhesive...let cure a few hours, remove nuts and install header. |
