Default Fuel tank pump fittings

I took my bike to the shop after the gasket started a gas smell in the house. The tech broke the bolts, now they tell me that I need a new tank. I suppose so NOW. Well, the way I see it, I did make it hard for him, seeing as how I probably weakened it. Anyone have any experience with the bolts that hold the fuel pump in place? What did you do? I'm thinking I could take this to a machine shop and they could cut off the old screw downs and put new ones in place.
Suggestions? Otherwise, I'm looking for a new tank and time to get it.....I haven't ridden in almost a month and withdrawls WILL start soon.

So you think they're lying about 'the tech was hand tightening the bolts, when it broke off'?
I think I did take of the last 2 threads on one of the bolts, though....sounds credible to me. I just haven't seen it yet.

oh my...hand tightening? DAMN?
is the shop going to be held liable for this?

i think the tech is the same gorilla that installs all of the drain plugs and oil filters on new vehicles, both cage and bike!
