I'm not going to bother trying to prove to you that you should be using premium fuel in any modern high compression bike or car because this topic has been beat to death. [sm=chairshot.gif]

But know this; if the octane you use is too low it will harm your engine but if it's higher then needed it won't. So does it not sense that if you are unsure of what octane you put in that you should buy premium fuel to be safe. For crying out loud it's only gonna cost you literally a couple of bucks more per tank in a bike. Don't be so f**king cheap![sm=icon_flaming.gif]

Any automotive expert will tell you running a higher octane than the rated value is a waste of money. Your bike will not run better nor get better gas mileage.

It isnt a question about being cheap. If your bike is designed for using regular gas and not premium than that is what you should use. Yes using to low octane will cause the gas to ignite to early but using to high will not give you better gas mileage or a power increase.

If your bike is designed for using 87 octane gas than you should use that gas nothing lower and nothing higher.
To low and you will be losing power because it will burn to early
To high and you will be losing power because it wont completely burn.

Hence dont be an idiot and argue about this. The manual for the bike says to use 86 for all 99-2003 Honda 600cc bikes. So use that. And incase you dont have 86 than use 87 because its the closest.
I am not telling you to use 86-87 octane in everything. I am saying that most bikes arent designed for best use with higher octane gas.

As for the other bikes. If it claims to use a certain grade in the manual than use what it says.

Oh. and as for what the manual says, They print those for a certain reason so you dont have to figure out what things are good and bad for your cars but if you want to figure it out for yourself than be my guest and throw that little book away.

I love it how someone gets on here to ask a simple question, and you guys blow it up into a GIANT war.

Personally, I believe those books (a.k.a. manuals) are made for a reason. You cannot tell me that you have not consulted it at one time or another about something you wanted to know about your bike (or vehicle). And, in the event you don't consult your manual, you probably ask someone or research it online. But, the funny thing is, the people you talk to in person or on the internet probably got that information from the manual that you deemed worthless. I like to use this website as a tool for learning. You idiots like to use it as ammunition against each other.

So, octane seems to be an argument here. I know I would personally use what is stated in the numerous manuals that have been cited here. Last time I checked, high compression engines were built engines used in drag racing, etc. But, hey, if you either 1) have built your engine for high performance or 2) won't suck it up and admit you are wrong, then go ahead and use whatever fuel you feel is necessary for your bike (or vehicle).

I know you may think I am an idiot girl who has no idea what I am talking about. But, let's just say... you don't know me. So, I may know alot more than you think.

***EDIT***

Also, wasn't a website cited here about octanes? It's funny that you guys get on here and ask for pointers and help on certain subjects. When... this website is no different than the one mentioned above. You believe some of the **** you read on here. Why wouldn't you believe statistics on another website?

My manual says shut the hell up and use what you want.......I always use premium fuel in my bike.....Why? becuase 3-4gallons of gas is only 30-40 cents more for premium then regular......so if you are too cheap to waste 30-40 cents...then you have issues.......

Threads like this never cease to amaze me.

This is pretty simple stuff guys. Welcome to internal combustion engine concepts 101.

First read this:

Then read this:
