engine rattle 08 CBR1000RR

I have an 08 CBR1000RR with 4100 miles. At idle there is a loud rattle from the engine. Sounds like the right side of the engine. When put into gear and the clutch let out, it goes away. Thought it might be cam chain tensioner, but, would that go away when you put it into gear and idle away. It happened at a track day and the bike continued to perform as usual with no change. Changed the oil and filter thinking the cam chain tensioner might be stuck but the sound didn't change. The pressure plate recall was done a couple thousand miles ago. Anyone with similar experience or ideas? Thanks.

Mine gets a makes a little noise if the oil is getting low. Usually the noise goes away when I top it up.

Found the problem. The clutch drive gear on the crankshaft twisted which then twisted the clutch basket. Requires a complete tear down to replace the crank and clutch. Fortunately Honda will replace all the parts even though it is over a year out of warranty. I'll pay the labor and have a new 1 year warranty on the engine. Apparently this has happened a few times on other bikes.

What mileage did you put on before the clutch re-call? Mine was done at about 3000km.

I'm having the same rattling. Sounds like its coming from the right side at low rpms in nuetral. Dont know if it goes away when in gear, cuz i have a fuel line busted, but you think its the same problem? Its not low on oil or anything.

But mine is a 95 with 8200 miles on it.

Thrasher: I had the "clutch inner" recall done somewhere in the 2,000 mile range. It has no apparent connection to the problem I now have with the twisted clutch basket and crank. I now know what I think caused this problem. While shifting between 3rd and 4th at about 130-140, I hit a false neutral between gears (using a Bazzaz quick shifter). By the time I got it back in gear there was a major difference between rear wheel speed and engine speed (my fault). The resulting high torque load on the clutch/crank gears caused the gear and clutch basket to twist.

greenheep: I don't know if you have the same problem but mine only rattled in neutral at idle, or while riding when there was slack in the drivetrain such as steady speed, not accellerating or decellerating. At idle, if you put it in gear, hold the brake, and let the clutch out until the engine is pulling against the brake, the sound went away. The sound only occurred when the was no load on the clutch drive gear. Hope you don't have this problem as it is very spendy. If you have a lot of miles on your bike it is likely it is just wear on the fingers of the clutch basket that allows the clutch plates to shake and rattle. A clutch basket is easy and less that $200. Also, you can smooth out the ridges on the fingers of the basket with a file and get a little more life out of it.

Cool bro, thanks for the info. Currently have my carbs out cleaning them, but will definately look into the basket. How hard is it to do that?

how much did Honda charge you over all for them to fix the problem. I think I have the same issue. I currently have the bike in bits just trying to get the CCT out to check that. It seams fine unfortunately. Looks like it's got to go in for a strip down.
