Electrical Issues
I am having some issues with my 2000 929 RR electrical system. This has recently become an issue. I just wanted to get some basic feedback on what some people's thoughts are. I am only so-so electrically.
After I ride my bike for a while (2 hours or so) my headlight will go out, dash light out, running lights out, brake lights don't work, and the rear turn signals stay on. I rode for about 2-3 hours, stopped, turned the bike off, came back about 15 mins later and the light issue happened I have had an after market LED smoked taillight and the turn signals integrated for over a year now. It has just recently (last 2 months) started to do this. Today was the 3rd time in the 2 months. The bike still runs perfectly starts up, runs, shifts, just no lights. I have looked at the wires for the taillight and nothing there, nothing grounding out, nothing exposed/cut. Followed from the rectifier towards the engine and all wires look fine. Main harness and all wires leading towards headlights are free of grounding out or being exposed/cut. Realys are good. Fuses are good. Just looking to see if someone may shed some light for me. I hear people talk about R/R all the time. What does that mean? (rear rectifier) I am guessing something in the electrical system gets hot and then shuts off?? After I got home, came back after 2 hours or so and the lights all worked (brake, turn, head). Just checked about 45 mins ago and no lights. It has me wondering as I am so-so electrically and frankly....lost. I appreciate the help. Will look at this in the morning, have to get some sleep, going for a ride again tomorrow... hopefully. Thanks again. -Trey |
Well, being electrically challenged myself,I'm not of much help. However the R/R is regulator/rectifier. Hondas are supposedly notorious for failing rectifiers ( for the record I've never replaced one). Maybe it's getting too hot and shutting something down? Hope you find it.

look at the starter switch and wiring. it is supposed to shut off those things during cranking, but then should turn them back on. take the switch apart and look for a bad connection.

I go out this morning and it all works fine... turn signals and all... but I am starting to notice a slight buzzing noise in the turn signal relay. I have rear LED turn signals and front "clown shoes" (factory bulbs) so of course the "hyperflash". Could that be causing the buzzing. never noticed it until today but from the time i push the signal button to it coming on there is a slight buzzing...
Will check the switch out.... thanks... will keep this updated... |
that shouldn't cause a buzzing.
your bike runs on DC (direct current), your stator creates AC (alternating current). the R/R is what turns the AC into DC. and when it does that, there's a lot of heat created, and that's why the R/R's usually fail. and that's what i'm leaning towards because you said you turned off the bike for 15 min (R/R would be cooling down), and then everything works again. that would say R/R to me. but i don't know for sure cuz i'm not there. i'd go ahead and grab a used one off of ebay switch it out, and go. |
I'm not sure about the buzzing, hard to say. As for the R/R, that's responsible for keeping the battery charged. Since you're not having a problem starting the bike, you're fine there as well.
With all those lights going out, not just the headlights I don't think the Starter Switch is the culprit. You're not indicating that the bike stops running, just that all the lights go out, Headlight, Brake Light, Turn Signals. Most likely it's somewhere near the supply to those circuits and that points to the fuse block. If I'm not mistaken, those lights all come off the same fuse. I would look closely at that fuse and the wiring that leads away from it. I don't have a wiring diagram for that bike so can't be sure they come from the same fuse, but many other models do. |
Thanks for all of the feedback.. I rode with NateDieselF4i today for about 3 hours and I never had a light failure. I checked inside of the switch like Demon said and the wires/connections looked good.
Rice.... The R/R gets hot. It is in the tail and when I open the trunk it is hot, but not enough to melt/warp the fairings. Also the bike starts and runs fine, sat for 9 days without being ran when i went to TEXAS 3 weeks ago and fired up fine. Dirt.... I will have to check that out tomorrow. I am going to trace all of those into the main harness, out of the harness and to where the fuse is. My rear turn signals just stay on when the failure happens and I have looked at those wires closely (thinking the taillight wiring was the culprit). Thanks again for the help... I will keep this updated. |
Does that taillight/turn signal assembly have some kind on control box wired in?

Worked a 15 hour day.. gotta love salary... Haven't had a chance to check the wires out. Will do this weekend if the weather permits.... |
Just an update: Checked every single place I could think of. All fuses are fine, all wires from both the starter switch and high/low/turn signal switch are not pinched nor have any cuts/grounding. Main harness is good. The wires going to the main fuse box are fine. The wires from the battery to the R/R are good. All small wires to turn signals and headlights are okay. I might have to change out the headlight relay and the turn signal relay or just get a new R/R just to do it. Thanks for all the help guys and wil try to keep it updated.
