dash problem..

hello all, im steve im new here, i figured id introduce myself here since i had a question anyways lol, ok here goes, i got a 99 cbr, runs and drives good no carb issues just all around good bike, untill you plug the dash in.. then it runs like absolute dog ass..cuts off going down the road, and stumbles before it dies, i can un plug the dash and it starts right up and its fine..weird any ideas?

There is feed-back from the speedometer that controls the ignition, I believe.
Hopefully wiser heads will speak up and confirm this. That's my understanding,
but I have no experience to back that up positively.

That said, Welcome! Always cool to meet another enthusiast.

You say its a 99, and carbs, so I assume you have an F4?

what I think is going on is that the ram air has been messed with on your bike, It has a valve that changes over the airflow from one set of intakes to another set at a certain speed. This is controlled by your speedometer. If someone has messed with it then this could be your fault, Try downloading the service manual for your bike and going threw all the air lines to the carbs and making sure they are hooked up correctly. Someone may have messed them up whenever the carbs where last serviced.

I Hope this helps, Also welcome to the forum!

just found it all in the service manual, its in chapter 5-1, page 83 if you download and open it with adobe reader. you can download it from many places. the links are at the top of the general tech section, that valve is used to control the air pressure in the floats at different speeds, and is switched back and forth by the speedo...

Goodluck man, keep us informed

the f4 is carbureted? So is only the f4i fuel injected then?

rpmraper Aug 21, 2011 01:15 PM

i assume the " I" in f4i means injected, like fuel injected.. i think in 2001 is when the f4i came out and its fuel injected, thanks for all the help guys ill keep updating as i go along.

the F4i and F4 have the same lowers, only differences in fairing are the tail ( f4i is a split seat ) and the headlights F4i has two headlights instead of the single. Over all look is very similar.

Its pretty simple to change over your gauges if you would like, check out the F4 section and do a search of the forum. there has been many people change them over, and lots of write ups on it.
