Default The damnedest thing...

My bike has been in winter storage for a month... I don't really do anything special to it... I just start it and run it up to temp... Well this weekend I started it up and let run to warm up, no problems... I shut it down after it hits 205 or so... Then just for the heck of it I go to start it back up and nothing... The fuel pump powers up and the starter cranks but the bike will not turn over... I haven't had any problems starting the bike till now... I'm hoping you guys can point me in the right direction as where to start looking first... I have some wrenching experience but my diagnostic skills are a bit lacking... The bike is an 02 954rr... Thanks in advance...

Each time you start it and just let it idle you are draining the battery more and more. Idling it does not let the battery recharge, you have to ride it for 20 minutes or more.

Get a Battery Tender Jr trickle charger and put it on that for the rest of the winter and resist the urge to keep starting it. All you're doing is draining the battery, as you've already discovered, and inducing moisture into the system. Have you ever noticed water that drips from a car's exhaust when it is first started on a cold morning?

With a bit of Google searching you can find a Battery Tender Jr for less than $20.

Thank you for the response, RoadiJeff... I put it on a battery tender and will leave it alone till the spring thaw... Is there anything else besides a weak battery that could cause this to happen? I'm trying to learn all about the bike, so any feedback is welcome...

So you are saying the starter is spinning but the engine isn't turning over?

This could happen with low voltage, not enough to kick the armature out to engage the 'flywheel' (is it a flywheel on a bike)?

Yeah, starter is spinning strong and the battery terminals are clean... I couldn't really tear into it in it's storage spot... The battery didn't act like it was low on voltage but I couldn't test it with a volt meter... My thoughts are that since I started it in the freezing cold that some moisture may have gotten in a connection somewhere and is causing a problem... I hope...

I wonder if your kickstand switch or your neutral switch have taken an inopportune moment to go crap the bed on you?

Dumb question - you didn't kill the motor with the kill switch, then leave it on, right?

Naturally an easy test for the Side Stand is to turn the ignition switch on and then see if the Side Stand light turns on and off as you raise and lower it.

lol... The bike is on stands and the kickstand is up... I always turn the bike off with the key and I never use the killswitch... It seems an extra movement to use the killswitch to turn off the bike then turn the key when the key turn does the job...
