Default Clutch questions

I have a 97 CBR 600 F3 just purchased with 29000 miles on it. The bike runs great so far. I have some questions about the clutch.

#1. The clutch lever has a lot of play in it. I tightened it where the cable feeds in, and it fixed it however it once again has a lot of play in it. Does this mean the cable is bad, or the clutch is going bad? Do I need to adjust the clutch at the clutch case.

#2. When replacing the clutch, do you have to buy new steel plates, or just new fiber plates and springs and re-use the steel plates that are in the basket already. Most of the kits I have looked at only come with new springs and fiber plates.

#3. I am hearing a sound when the bike is running in neutral and I let out the clutch. Almost like a chatter and when I engage the clutch it goes away. Does anyone know what this could be?

Like I said, the bike is running great, I am just wondering what I should do. I plan on replacing the clutch since I have never had a new bike with a new clutch, and it's not that hard to replace.

If the clutch lever has alot of play in it, yet the clutch still engages strongly, then chances are it's just the cable. Adjust it accordingly.

The chatter you hear when the clutch is out at idle is normal. There was another post about this somewhere, but every honda i've ever had (this is my third) has had the same chatter. Goes away when you engage the clutch.

Not sure about the plates. Hopefully someone else can chime in.

If you are going to replace it anyway, I would be concerned if the noise were happening after you replace the clutch.

Your bike has two places to adjust the clutch cable. One on the handle bars, which I am thinking is the one you already tried, and one by the clutch itself. Try adjusting the cable right by the clutch and see if this helps.

The clutch plates don't NEED to be replaced, but I always do anyways, because they are pretty cheap, and your Clutch Disks will last longer.

The steel plates have a min. thickness you can find it in a repair manual or call local dealer for the spec. I would change everything so it's all new just the why I like to do it because you have to take them off anyway and cheaper then doing the job twice!! Good luck try adjusting it first!

Thanks for all the help. So where can I find the steel plates, and how many will I need to buy?
