clutch noise, plz help !

hi all, ive just brought my 1st bike a 1991 cbr600fm, it has a rumbling noise coming from the clutch area with goes when you pull the clutch in.
I know that its obviously a clutch fault but can any1 advise me as to which part of the clutch assembly may cause this noise? i appreciate that in an ideal world i should replace the lot, but as im already saving like mad for a blade im trying to keep cost down as much as possible.
Also what kind of a job is it to do ? i am a mechanic but have never worked on a bike in my life.

Any help or advice any 1 can give would be very welcome.
Thanks a lot :icon_bike::icon_razz:

First thought would be the lifter bearing. Its the roller bearing on the clutch outer hub assembly. You only have to remove the outer hub of the clutch. Pretty easy to access and change. Since your mechanic, it would be a very easy job for you to do. There is also a needle bearing, usually reffered to as the starter bearing, on the clutch hub inner. that one is a little hard to deal with. You will need a clutch tool and have to remove the entire clutch to change it. But, that one usually is not the one that goes bad. The majority of the time, its the lifter bearing. You can also grasp your clutch, and see if it has any play in it on the shaft. If it does, then the starter bearing may be bad. If there isnt any play, it shouldn't be cause of any noise.

just a side note though, some rumbing noise is very common. Its much more pronounced on the cbr 600F1-F3 series bikes. I would listen to someone elses and make sure its not the normal noise when the clutch is not engaged that those bikes tend to make. If its not rediculously loud, I'd bet money its the normal noise from the clutch.
