No, as MgA said get a rear stand and spin the wheel as you clean the chain and don`t forget the inside bit.

 

I know this probably goes against the grain of a lot of more meticulous people, but I don't generally do much actual cleaning of my chains. Now, I wipe down the chain with WD-40 after each ride, then wipe it down, then apply Maxima chain wax which sets up as it cools. Never had a problem doing this on any of my bikes in 17 years or riding. (well, used to use chain lube before starting to use wax but you get the point)

But I'm not generally riding in dirt or getting it seriously caked with crap, never have. Always done racetrack, freeway, or canyons. Best part of the VFR is the center stand that makes chain wipe-down and lubing/waxing easy. On the 929RR, the chain is changed every other season of use at our schools, with a quick wipe down/wax and that keeps it doing fine.

 

I typically wipe the chain down with WD-40 if it gets pretty dirty. The only times I actually CLEAN the entire chain is if I'm replacing a sprocket or am removing the rear wheel.

 

The only reason I clean my chain is to make it look good. Use Maxima chain wax it doesn't fly off. Put the Wax on when the chain is hot. If you need to clean the chain use Honda bright. Hondas bright allow you to wipe chain lube right off.
NOTE: I dont ride on dirt with my CBR.

 

Do what ever ya please but if ya don`t clean ya chain it`ll get full of grit and make its own grinding paste to knacker itself up, i clean mine everytime i clean the bike this way it never gets that full of crap and is easy to clean just do with WD-40 like everyones sayin. 10,000 miles n still in exceptional condition.

 

I'm with Anubis on this one. I clean the chain with kerosene and a toothbrush. Then lube it with a heavy weight oil. Never liked the wax much -- gets all nastified over time.

When you say you clean it with WD 40, do you just spray it down or is there more to it?
