At a local Honda shop....one of the mechanics was talking about it....had some in-house Honda manual and showed me where the designation meant.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe CB is the engine designation code for the inline engines for which these bikes are equipped, and the R means it's the race version of the motor.

The CB letters were used since the early 60's for any Honda that was the street, sport version. Like the CB 305 Super Hawk, CB 100, a low pipe single cyl.street bike, etc. It may mean "crossed brace racing" now, but that would be a new name for the old "lettered" system.

CBR= CB, engine designation- inline 4. R- racing technologies learned from the race track used in manufacturing of Hondas new productin streetbikes. F- is for the formula 1 fairing style incorporated into the new production bikes of that 1st year "1987" each generation of CBRF series F1 in 87 to 90, then F2, 90 to 95, F3's debut in 1995 till we now have the 4th gen CBR F4, then the fuel injected models of the F4i.

I would agree that CB is for the engine design and the R is for racing.
