All you need is two jack stands, and two people to lift the front of the bike while you place the jack stands under the motor mounts. It took me and two friends like 3 seconds to get it off the ground.

I know this is an old thread and sorry to resurrect it, but it's good info and I have a method to add that may work for a few of you. I have always pulled the side fairings and used ratchet straps on each side of the frame connected to engine hoist like mentioned above. What I do differently is use an engine leveler. That also works really well for suspension adjustments and can be used for front and rear. It stays very stable and works really well for holding the front end stable for doing rear shock adjustments.

I use a ladder and ratchet straps. Works great.

When I did my dust seals and steering bearings I knocked up a wood frame and put a big ratchet strap under the bike and over the top of the frame, worked pretty well but I did need a paddock stand on the rear to stabilize it.

when doing mine, i just used a jack under the exhaust as well as a couple of the other guys in here, but what i'll add is : as soon as the front lifted off the ground i piled a bunch of short 2x4's (cutoffs) i had laying around.. under the exhaust : again once the tire was up in the air, i slid them under and then let the jack down a little bit so the exhaust was resting on the wood, it was ten times more stabil that way and if you do it close to a wall use a ratchet strap to go over the outside of the bike and tie it back to the wall for a safegard, cause when you start wrenching on everything you could easilly knock it off balance..
