Default 929 eating a valve?

How common is it for a bike to eat a valve? my 01 929 was at a shop getting work done when it ate a valve idling. It is a high milleage motor but not sure if this is common or not? They say a new motor is best idea but I wondered how much it would cost to rebuild it? any price range for a basic rebuild? thanks

At Idle? Not very common for anything to swallow a valve at idle, chances are it started breaking before it was sitting there.

They said it was idling and just started clanking and stoped. I have just never heard of this?
