3rd Gear won't stick high rpm
I've recently contracted a problem where my bike doesn't like to stay in 3rd gear.
Background: I have aftermarket rearsets that have proven to be finicky to adjustments for gear change purposes. The 1st time I noticed the problem, I finally got the rearsets to stay put with the proper application of loc-tite. Later that afternoon (while running hard), I had to continually re-engage 3rd as it would drop back to 2nd.
Now it does this all the time.
I've noticed that right at 9500rpm, it kicks into 2nd and the rpm's shoot up (as they should). And because I'm in high rpm, when I click back into 3rd it goes back to 2nd immediately. I have to double click into 4th if I want to continue accelerating.
Is this likely a rearset or transmission issue?

Unless your rearset is constantly putting downward force on the shift linkage, I don't think it's related. It sounds like the dogs that engauge into 3rd have worn or beveled edges, which causes it to kick back out. I believe it's trans issues. How many miles on the bike. It sounds like you put the bike through it's paces (fun) a good part of the time. Would you say that it's been ridden that way most of it's life ?
