Default 2001 F4i won't wheelie, poor gas mileage

Runs good, but only gets around 30mpg on the road. Also, my son says he can't lift the front wheel. He moved up from a '96 F4 that had neither of these problems. Just got dyno results of ~96hp and 46lb ft torque. Is all of this normal, or what?

96hp? That's pretty damn close... close enough that the dyno error, different weather, etc could account for it... if the bike was running poorly it wouldn't have gotten close to that much hp.

96 or 99 F4?

Anyhow - those numbers look right, could be he's not used to the fuel injection...

30mpg is a bit low - can you describe how you measured that?

What is the gearing on the bike? If it is not stock gearing then odometer error could explain the perceived low mpg and the difficulty wheeling. If I were right, you brought the bike from someone who liked touring and installed taller sprockets (and not shorter sprockets like the race/stunt/squids like me use). Taller sprockets mean lower RPM at highway speed and harder to wheelie... they also mean that if you don't fix your speedometer error that the speedometer/odometer are UNDER reading (giving you the poor MPG numbers).

Thanks for the prompt reply.

The mpg is approx. When we rode Vermont &NH together recently, he'd run low on gas when I had ~1/4 tank left on mine. Previously onhis '96 F3, we'd use about the same amount of gas.

Rear sproket has stock # teeth. I'll check the trans. sproket.

Thank you.

BTW, what did you mean about him not being used to fuel injection. would this affect low end performance?

Fuel injection never seems as smooth as a carb.
