05 600rr
Im looking to buy an 05 600rr from a local shop but before i do i want some opinions on a question.
I went to the shop today and had them start the bike. It started just fine and everything was good, when i went to rev it, after it came back down to idle, it puffed out white smoke then went clear again. It didn't smell weird and i know what burning oil smells like and i don't think it was that either. Two people I've talked to say its cause its been sitting ( probably been sitting for a month and a half), one says its because the motor was cold, the salesman says that they all do it... whats everyone's take on it?

If it was cold, then thats probably what it was, condensation in the exhaust system. If your concerned about it, go back to the shop, let the bike fully warm up. Once its fully warmed up (5-10 minutes at idle), rev it up a few times to see if it still puffs. If it puffs really white steam like smoke and its fairly heavy, there may be an issue.
What you will probably get is a slight blackish blueish tint puff as you let off of the gas. This is normal. When you get on the gas, the injectors are dumping a lot of gas into the combustion chamber, then when you abruptly let the gas off, a few things happen. The Ecu retards the timing back to an idle timing, the injectors return to an idle state as well. the issue here is their is still gas going through the injectors that hant been used up yet. So, the engine is revving down, but there is still a lot of gas being put into the engine.( this is only a split second). So you basically get a split seconds worth of an extremely rich condition. therefore, you will see a little puff of smoke when you let off the gas.
Since the salesman said they all do it and your still concerned. If he has any other bikes there, start one of those bikes up and see the condition is similiar. One thing to keep in mind though, early 600RR's had a tendancy to puff a bit more than others on throttle down. Its nothing serious and normal for these bikes. the only time I would be concerned is if the bike was doing it at a steady rpm. If you raise the rpms up to say 4000 and is puffing smoke while its at a steady rpm, then there is issues. If it only does once you let off the gas and its only a little amount, you should be ok.
