'00 F4 Help

So, a friend and I were headed out to eat, luckily he was in his car behind me. I pull up to a stop light, all is fine and dandy. Light turns green and I start letting out the clutch and rolling on the throttle to go and BAM engine cuts off and stalls. I pull over to the sidewalk and he goes and parks and comes over to help and we can't get it to start. We walk it across to a gas station where we let it sit while we eat, we come back and it doesn't start. We let it sit, and we think it is the battery, so we turn the lights onto dim (they were on bright) and bam it starts. Back it up and turn it around to go, put it in first and BAM it dies again. We let it sit again and take it off to a rolling start and get it going (hence why I still think it is the battery, or at least that is part of the problem). I let it sit to maybe charge the battery a bit, and we take off going and I am very cautious with the cluth, when all of a sudden all power in first gear stops. Clutch engaged or disengaged it was doing nothing, no rpms going up or anything. I pull into a parking lot and it stalls again. I finally make it back to campus, about 4 miles away with some very VERY careful clutch play and first gear. Oddly, however, whenever I get into second gear and higher power is all fine just as it has always been, but I noticed first gear was making an odd noise.

Cliffnotes:
Bike stalls, won't start, get it started with low beams off, dies. Get it started form a rolling start, first gear loses all power. Make it back to campus with careful play of first gear. First gear makes an odd grinding type sound (very faint). Oh, and I could smell gasoline too, but that may just be because of how much I may have flooded it a bit from earlier.

BTW, bam is just an expression, not a sound it was making. Sorry!

Thanks for any suggestions!
