To the OP, you can easily do any "tune-up" job yourself with the correct tools (allen keys and socket set). If you drop your bike off at a shop and tell them to tune it up, they'll probably check your plugs, change fluids, adjust chain slack and maybe even sync the TBs, but they certainly are not going to re-shim your valves unless you directly specify them do so, but count on spending around $300 for that job alone. If you have less than 16k on your bike I wouldn't even consider it.

F4i's are pretty damn tough. Spend your $300 elsewhere like you said. Maybe get some new muffler bearings

My view on valve adjustment is to buy whatever tools, manuals, etc. you need and do it yourself. A shop charges a LOT for this service.

On my old bike I started out paying to have the dealer do this work. After I bought a service manual and started doing it myself I first noticed that the adjustments were way off, making me suspicious that it had either not been done at all previously or it had been rushed through and just 'sort of' in the neighborhood on the specs.

It might take me 3-4 times longer to do than a shop will but I know it has been done and done right afterward.

I agree. If you have the ability and the time, do it yourself. I really couldn't trust a shop to do that kind of work and know that they actually did it unless I sat there and stared at them the whole time. You just have to trust them.

Muffler bearings? I would spend my money on blinker fluid.
