will this work??
Alright so i had a bit of a brain storm. I want to make a custom solo Cowl for my banana seat and i have done a lot of reading on how to do it. I was thinking that instead of making a mold out of foam or something and using that to cover in fiberglass, what if i remove the rear plastic and seat. i can them take these inside, cover them adequately in either masking tape or aluminum foil or something of that nature.
After covering them, i was thinking that a self hardening Modeling clay might be a good base for the fiberglass. So instead of using styrofoam use the clay to basically reproduce the tail and make it into a mold. Will i have to coat it in something before i FG it? like i know in one write up i saw a guy covered his foam in epoxy or something to create a more smoothe base and so it didn;t eat the foam. It was just a though, don't flam the newb too badly please |
RE: will this work??
I know 2 very mechanically inclined people who tried to make seat cowls. One on and older F4 and one on an 04 F4i. Both guys wrecked their stock seats and one damaged his subframe plastics. By the time they were done saving themselves the $200 for the targa cowl they had both cost themselves a great amount of time and much more than $200 worth of repairs and equipment. Save yourself this headache and just get the Targa cowl. The guy with the F4i ended up picking up a seat cowl in the end anyway.
Them Targa cowls are well built and the paint matches very well. I'd have mine if it wasn't on backorder for over a year now. |
RE: will this work??
okay this has nothing to do with the thread in particular, but why can i buy a nice alpine stars textile jacket with armor and all for 200$ or a little piece of injection-molded, painted plastic for the same price. it cost them 4$ to form the plastic and a little bit more to paint it.

RE: will this work??
Welcome to motorcycling. If you want it your going to pay. And that alpinestars jacket you're talking about cost the company $1 to make. I haven't seen one thing in this industry I'd say is worth what you will pay for it. How does a company justify making frame siders which cost in the neighborhood of $100. It's all pretty sick. C'est la vie.
I also happen to know that there is a very low volume run on the seat cowls, and Targa actually goes to great pains to match paints and insure proper fit. That all costs money in labour and general production. American labour costs more money than the Chinese labour that put the Alpinestars jacket togethet. Furthermore the alpinestars jacket is mass produced in large quantity thus making it cheaper. Don't get me wrong the prices are sick, but if they didn't make money they wouldn't produce the product. |
