I saw some which were in pieces like 4 sections to do a wheel. do u need to take the wheel off or can it be done properly with bike still together. I will be ordering refelective yellow ones - like Blackdog said more visible at night the better. Whic is better the straight tape or the curved ones???

I'm assuming that the curved tape comes in sections. I wouldn't want different sections, that is 4 places for it to start peeling.
You leave the tire on. But, if you can get the back tire off the ground it will be easier.
The regular rim tape goes on pretty easy. Just do little sections at a time and keep everything even. Clean the rim really well before you start. I took me quite awhile to get all the dirt/grease off.
