What do yall think about the small tail bag from Cycle Gear? I think its on sale for $25 right now. Thought about picking it up to strap to my 06 F4i for longer rides or trips to the store.

The best part of a tank bag is laying on it on those long trips.
That alone makes them worth considering. If you don't want to invest in one right now, consider using that cargo-net to strap your back-pack to the tank, instead of to the tail.
Use a towel or something to cushion it.

On the rain-gear front, if you want to go on the cheap, get a disposable set of painter's coveralls from lowe's or home Depot. They'll do alright for any but the worst downpours. If you don't use them, after you invest in a quaity suit you have a cheap/easy to carry fix for a occasional passenger situation.

One other thing to consider, even if it's not raining, if you hit a sudden temperature drop a suit will help keep you warmer, too.

I rode 150 miles, about a 3 hour ride, with a back pack on my back. Wasn't bad at all. But obviously having the pack strapped to the bike will be nicer.

Turns out this will be a 220-250 mile ride. 4 1/2 hours not including stops

I think you would be alright just wearing the backpack, especially if this will be stretched out over 3 days. Hell, I ride more than that in 3 days just going in circles. lol But that's just my opinion.

Got a cargo net at walmart lastnight so I'm good to go. And no, we are going up to Kentucky tomorrow, staying there Thursday and coming home Friday. It's not stretched out

Agree on the cargo net too. I picked up a Tour Master rain suit from my local shop, it was around 70 bucks I think. Kept me nice and dry in a down pour so I wouldn't take a trip without one now.
