Last night I broke down my spare engine and robbed the cam chain tensioner guide and the cam reluctor ring on the end of the exhaust camshaft and installed them on my bike. Tonight its button her up and hear it run again finally.

For me (also not today but this month)
I used up a tire for the first time in my bike life !! (previous ones all got punctured)
New rear tire, new rear brake pads, new drivechain and sprocket.
I'm finally starting to use up stuff I put on, it feels great to use fresh stuff up instead of fixing **** that broke.
For the sprockets, I moved up from stock gearing to -1/+2 and I've been loving it. A bit of extra pep. It does rack up mileage for sure, I got the speedodrd but haven't got around to install it yet...
Thanks. I finally put her back together this weekend and was a pleasure to ride.
I noticed the master cylinder weeping fluid from the cover through the small holes between the cover and the reservoir-think it's by design to squirt the extra fluid oil. I reopened and ensured the level is just below the line and is good now. Will keep a close eye on the calipers as well as I used aftermarket caliper join bolts which I noticed is a slightly different design to the oem. Don't want loosing oil although the seals were all oem. Next up is proper suspension setup-now that I have the beautiful Swedish golden in the rear . I have never done this before, so tempted to take it to a suspension specialist for £100 but the pull of doing it myself and learning in the process is hard to resist as well...

How much of a difference the altered sprocketing makes in terms of pull and character? Did you notice a drop in fuel economy?

Sounds good, I need my suspension set up as well. If you do end up doing yourself let me know, I'm also a little intimidated by it. Good luck with your caliper bolts

I'm really glad I did the sprocket change. I wasn't sure at first cos everybody on the internet talked about it like it will transform it into a literbike hahaha but not at all, all it does is add a bit of spice n pep to your acceleration. Don't really notice it when cruisin, but when I'm full acceleration (i.e hwy ramps) its loads of fun. Altho it was fun before on stock gearing as well.
One of the biggest differences I felt was when trying some baby wheelies. I can feel it start to come up with much more power and punch, with less rpm. Well...it's somewhat hard to describe as it is all subjective. Definitely for me it was Fun And Smiles +5

MPG I can tell you definitely drops, I always keep track of my mpg and while I don't have enough data for an accurate average for the new sprockets yet, it seems to have dropped about 4 mpg. But I'm sure it varies depending on your riding style and if you take highways a lot.

Added Givi support brackets and top case to my F4i! Had to import the brackets from Spain but it was worth it.

The problem is the rear is not what needs modifications, the front end does. .68kg/mm springs are great if your like 100lbs. My 175lbs requires around .95kg springs. This strong of a spring will way overpower your rebound damper so that needs to be upgraded as well. Compression damper can stay stock but works better with 5-7wt oil instead of the oem 10w.

My problem is at the moment I have very little understanding of suspensions and the factors/parameters at play to arrive at a correct setting for your weight. So I have no way to make sense of your comment. I did go for 9.5 Ohlins linear springs for my 75 kilo frame(don't think they do progressive like oem anyway) when I rebuilt my forks 2 months ago. But I cheaped out and didn't go for revalving. I did think of it but didn't do it.
I am now leaning towards just getting it done at a suspension specialist as too lazy to again spend days doing it but do want to understand suspension so a bit of reading has to be done

Its super easy ONCE you grasp the concept. Watch some video's. Buy a suspension tuning book. Best mods I ever did for my bikes for sure. Maybe pay a pro once if they are willing to walk you threw the steps so you understand better.

Got a 2001 F4i for AUD$2700 but she hadn't been looked after by the PO, she'd been un-rego'd for nearly a year and a half - but she started up 1st time and looked pretty good mechanically.

So after buying ma new Pup beginning of Jan i decided to give her service and dress her up a little. Stripped her down to the bones to get at everything and did:

Oil and filter change.
Coolant change.
Replaced rear brake pads.
Replaced brake fluid front/rear.
Replaced reservoir cap.
Fitted new air filter.
Cleaned out the throttle body.
New battery.
New mirrors/riser block.
New shorty brake/clutch levers.
New front/rear indicators/adaptors/connectors.
New grips/throttle tube & bar ends.
New tail fairing.
New rear brake pedal (old throttle tube and rear brake pedal broke when she slipped of the paddock stand cos the rubber of the old plates had come off!!)
Cut the rear fender and fitted a Competition Werkes fender eliminator.
Sprayed the left and right engine covers.
Sprayed the rear pass pegs.
Sprayed the fender eliminator.
Sprayed the frame.

Had a few 'problems' along the way as i've never really done anything to my bikes before - always had nearly new bikes and I've always put them into the garage for everything.

After i'd stripped her down and cleaned her up i was putting the rear wheel back in when she slipped of the paddock stand and fell on her right hand side - luckily it only cracked the throttle tube/broke the indicator (which i was replacing anyway) and the rear brake pedal - so got away pretty lightly on that one.

Then had an absolute nightmare. Thought i'd check she'd start before putting her back together after working on her - got her started after a few tries, checked all the lights etc - indicators and the front brake light didn't work (forgot i'd disconnected the front brake switch and i'd put the connectors on the wrong way round - who'd have thunk an 'orange' wire didn't goto to red and an 'green' wire didn't goto black!?) So next morning i figure i'd got the connectors the wrong way round and hadn't re-connected the front brake switch - then when i checked her - she started ok but nothing worked, so after some head scratching and tyre kicking i found i'd blown a fuse (light/ind/horn) the night before - so replaced that and everything was working. So spent the day putting (nearly) everything back together - then before i put the fairings back on i checked her again to see if everything was working and......................NOTHING, NADA, SFA!!!!!

So i popped down the local beer-o at the mall and grabbed a 6pack and a bottle of wine and drowned ma sorrows thinking the worst.

Spent a few hungover hours the next morning looking at the service manual's electrical system/wiring diagram sections (which only made my hangover worse) and i wasn't looking forward to heading upto the carport to see where i'd gone wrong, after some more head scratching and tyre kicking i found the main fuse had blown - so replaced that and............that blew!

Hmmm, so i worked ma way back from what i'd done the day before, looking at my rear harness wiring, batt connection/wiring/ECU/ECM - couldn't see anything wrong and i was stood scratching my head on her left hand side when i noticed a wire (which had previously been hanging down by the lower bolt on the seat frame - which wasn't connected to anything) had got caught when i'd re-attached the seat frame and was causing the short circuit - HA!!!!

So fixed that and she started up again, lights/indicators/horn all worked - put the fairings/mirrors and indicators on her and - HAPPY DAYZ!! Took her out for spin and she handled pretty decently - and i only lost a bar end and (nearly) a heal plate as i was in a bit of a hurry to get her out! Luckily a had a spare bolt for the heal plate and i had my old bar ends which are now locktite'd in and won't be going anywhere for a while!!

So, from a tatty looking (and poorly maintained) 2001 CBR 600 F4i for AUD$2700, she's now in pretty good shape and looking pretty damn good after spending 400 bucks (and 3 weeks) on her

Got a new shorter carbon exhaust/cnc rearsets/ss braided brake lines/rim tape-wheel decals coming later in the month (300 bucks) and then suspension tune/set up - (another 300) and then she'll be pretty much ready for her graduation ball

I've really enjoyed working on ma Pup, sure she's been a pain in the *** a few times but that only adds to the satisfaction of looking at a new(ish) bike after all the work (and hassle's) have gone into her.

Just after i bought her
oil/filter change
Just before she fell over!
Don't look now - I'm naked!
RH cover - before spraying
LH cover - before spraying
dirty throttle body - before cleaning
Coolant change - before exhaust/seat frame came off

RH view
LH view
