Wanted: 954 Tailight Conversion How to!
 

Hi guys

I have seen that some people have completed the conversion on the FSport (F4i) to a flush tail with the 954 tailight, I think this looks really good and plan on having a go myself after graduation (well at least after my final exam).

I'v had a search but can't find many details on how it is done :icon_shrug:, can anyone point out a how to that I might have missed, or generally provide some details!

It is not a simple process and involves lots of fabrication and test fitting. Others have done it different ways, but here is my method in a few short steps:

1. Chop stock undertray similar to any other undertail installation. It should be completely flush with the subframe at the bottom. Leave enough of the tray for it to mount with the 2 8mm bolts at the end of the subframe.

2. Put your tail fairing back on and grab your 954rr taillight (I used a smoked Clear Alternatives one). Hold it where you want it to sit and figure out how you will make a bracket to attach it to the same 8mm bolts at the end of your subframe. You will need to be good at making a bracket that is sturdy enough to hold the taillight up and not get bent.

3. Make another bracket that bolts to the same two holes at the subframe to mount the license plate bracket to.

4. Cut your undertail out of cardboard and start test fitting it. You will need to do lots of test fitting here. I made the hole for the light, a license plate bracket bolt, and a license plate LED. When its complete, copy the cardboard pattern to sheet metal or plastic sheet. Paint or cover in vinyl like I did.

5. Relocate key lock and make a license plate bracket. Wire up taillight and bolt everything together. Enjoy!

Thanks Shadow. A few tips I learned, but a lot of the process is figuring out how YOU can attach it to your bike. A good principle to follow for any custom modifications. :)

cheers axsys, good post there, just what I was looking for. It was yours that inspired me to do it! (Have also copied your air intake indicators :P, and am thinking of having some silver parts chemically blackened at a local anodiser)

have you got a photo of the point where you chopped the current tray?

looks a fairly complex job, for now ill just enjoy the bike and save this mod for the winter season.

how big was the sheet of plasic you bought?
