used 2002 f4i
so here's the deal. i bought my first bike, an f4i with 20k miles. i'm averaging about 25-30 mpg, city driving. through this website i found that a lot of people with the same bike are averaging so much more doing wheelies and stuff. i don't have any service records on the thing, so i don't know what's been done to it. is there anything i can do, or even tell the mechanic to look at specifically? how much $ do you think the service that you would recommend cost? thanks guys! honest mechanics are tough to come across these days!

Does it still have the stock gearing? 16 tooth sprocket front and 46 tooth rear? If it's been regeared that can affect the fuel mileage. But also check as was mentioned the air filter, and that none of the brakes are dragging heavily (it's normal for them to lightly drag all the time). Also if you don't know if the plugs were ever changed, probably a good idea to go ahead and change them out... should be done at 16k. Also make sure you're running the proper tire pressure, which is in the area of 36 psi front and 42 psi rear (I always run about 3 psi lower that that), but just to make sure they're not way low

I believe with my 02 F4i I average about 35-40 mpg doing what what I would call semi-normal driving (commuting, joy riding, but doing it with some aggresive throttle). But I can get up into the mid 40's or higher when taking it easy. Mine is all stock so far. Check some of the things others have recommended (air filter, fuel, plugs etc). And yes there is no jetting of a fuel injected bike.
