tips for removing oil filter

changing oil for the first time, the oil filter is on very tight and i can't get it to budge.

Besides buying a special tool, how do i get it off?

if your hand is just slipping on it try using a towel to get a better grip.
other than that go buy a wrench

ok got it, just had to stop being lazy and remove the cowl to get a better angle.
yeah i used the oil filter wrench

not the best idea but in a pinch it works: get a long philips head screwdriver... pound it straight through the filter at an angle with good leverage, then turn... breaks it loose every time

removed mine with everything intact. using the wrench was a pita but i got it off.

I ran into the same situation and removed the right side lower cowl too. Got at it with a scissor-style filter wrench and it twisted free.

Last person who put it on did it too tight..Try to borrow a wrench from a friend...in the future just put it on correctly and you wont have to use one again.

Nonsense. Wrench's a for non imaginative goofs. Go to a hardware store, I got mine at Menards. Get one of those jar openers, with the rubber strap, with a long handle, just slide it over, pull it tight, and twist, great for on and off. Worked like a charm for only 5 bucks. and you have it for jars.
