Stock sprockets are: 16 tooth front and 46 tooth rear... 2.88 Final Drive Ratio.

Default What's the big difference in gearing?

What's the big difference in gearing?? I hear alot of ppl go -1/+2. Does it really change that much of torque and acceleration?? I'm looking for quicker acceleration.. I have a stock 04 cbr4fi.. if it changes that much, would I be able to go to say a 14/48?? That'd be -2/+2.. any advice would be greatly appreciated.. thanks

You'd have to balance quicker-acceleration vs. having to do extra shift. That may wipe out any gains you have from faster acceleration.

Always chuckle a bit when someone says they need quicker acceleration, but yes, it does make a noticeable difference. It also throws your speedo/odo way off, makes the engine run @ higher rpms at a given speed, and makes wheelies much easier...

On the flip side, you can go up a tooth in front... makes the speedo/odo dead on, improves mpg a bit, and lowers the engine rpms at a given speed.

-1+2 will make big difference in off the line acceleration. Once you're up over say 50 it[s not that muich because you would normally just downshift. The only thing I didn't like is that when riding on the highway at 70mph I was running 7,000rpm and it got buzzy.

You can get a speedometer calibrator - I had one and had it dialed in so it was less than 1mph all the way up to 100mph. Never really cared how close it was after that.

I always do this on all my bikes, even +2 in front on commuters to lower revs @ freeway speeds and make for more relaxed cruising. I went from 55mpg to 60mpg on my Ninja 250 for 35-mile commutes to San Francisco with 16t in front instead of factory 14t . Got me an entire week of commuting on single tank, rather than having to fill up on Friday. And as mentioned, if you need to accelerate faster, just drop gear or two.
