Running Temperature
 

Hey guys, I recently picked up a used 01 F4i and was wondering if my running temp is too high. While in traffic sitting I notice my temp rise up to 238 F. I thought this might be high since I've read of others only hitting the high 220s. Is this bad and what could be the cause of this? What should I check?

While cruising the temp drops to under 200, moving in city traffic its in the low 200s.

Check the reservoir make sure that's not empty. Air in the system will cause it to run a little hot. Bad thermostat could cause high running temps as well. The resevoir is under the seat/rear gas tank, well it is on 04-06 model, not sure for 01-03.

Thats sounds kinda high. Does your fan kick in at least when you are up in those temps? I've got an 01 F4i too and the temp can get up to 220 especially during these hot days and through city streets. But the fan will usually kick in by then.

The fan does come on, and as soon as I start moving the temp drops. Its just sitting in traffic when its gets HOT.

Yeah, I don't remember where I got the name, I think it was a sticker on one of my R/C cars way back in the day. Its stuck ever since.

I have a 03 f4i and my temp never gets past228and thats when the fans kick on

if it gets to 255, shut the bike down. that's the critical temp. but upper 230's is high. I've had all sorts of temperature problems with my last car. When the temperature is ran hotter than normal, it usually meant air in the lines, a sticking thermostat, or a damaged water pump (Each one a progressively more expensive fix, so check them in that order).. Usually it's one of the three... unless you have a leaking head gasket or something. I'd try purgeing the lines of air. If that doesn't work, I'd go to the next-least expensive fix: The thermostat. It's just a $9 piece of metal.. Not too hard to do. It's most likely one of those two things...

With my car, I had the exact same problem. Wasn't the thermostat, air in the lines, or the water pump. It was a leaking head gasket. Car was at normal temps on the highway, but idle, the thing would redline. Not a cheap fix (unless you know how to replace it yourself). Hopefully that's not it.
