Replacing fuel pump....help
I need to replace the fuel pump on my 01 f4i. Anyone have any pics and/or suggestions? Also, when I try to remove my rear seat with the key it won't release the seat. Bike is stock and has not been ridden in a while. Battery has already been changed. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

You can download a copy of the manual here: LINK. It'll have illustrations & step by step instruction. It should help you figure out the seat latch too.

Thanks for the link. I may be missing it but I could not find anything in there that deals with the rear seat not removing. For removing the rear cowl it simply tells you to use the key take the seat off. When I use the key nothing happens and the seat is still locked. Thanks for any help.

Also, the manual says to use new packing around the fuel pump and use new sealing washers between the fuel pump and hose and the fuel hose banjo and throttle body. Is this really necessary? I was going to try and get it done today but I bought the fuel pump from ebay and don't have that stuff new. Thanks again.

You can reuse the brillo material around the pump, just be careful when removing and reinstalling. Ditto the banjo washer. It probably won't leak--mine has been through four tank removals and works fine. But if it does, you know what to do. The large gasket between the plate and the tank should be replaced. It might not leak if re-used, but I've had them go both ways. If you must reuse it, smear it with a clear, silicone type sealer like Dow DC-4. Follow the torque pattern and value *exactly.* If you over torque, you'll wish you didn't. Good luck with it. --Paul |

Ok, I got the fuel pump installed and it seems to operate normally (you can hear it prime). Now the bike won't start normally, I have to hold the throttle wide open for it to start. Then it seems to hesitate when I start to open the throttle. It will stay running (although not very well) as long as I give it gas. A few seconds after I stop, it stalls out.
The bike sat for quite a while and I thought the gas smelled funny and had a funny color to it when I changed the fuel pump. I got most of the old gas out and then put in some fresh stuff to see if that would solve the problem but it has not. Any advise? Thanks in advance. |

If you have to start the bike with open throttle and it stalls if you don't give it gas, it sounds like it could be the idle speed. Check that throttle stop screw is in the right position. It's the little knob on the left side of the bike right above the engine cover/next to the 3 tubes. It should be set around 1,300 rpms. DON'T twist it too much! I had a similar problem with my F2 because I accidentally completely unscrewed the throttle stop.
