Is it that big of a bear to remove the head and all that myself. After watching a video on actually doing the time-sert, that part seems easy.

Does anyone know of a how to for taking the top half of the motor apart

I don't remember seeing any top end rebuilds in the 'How to' section. Perhaps there are, check it out.

If you can get a head set cheap from the bay I would be inclined to do a head swap. It's not hard and you could complete the work over a weekend if you've never done this before. I say a weekend because when you've got the fairings off and other parts removed, even if you do the head swap in a day there's bound to be something else you'll want to attend to under her clothes.
If your local engineers aren't interested in doing a thread insert, either try further afield or **** em all and just swap heads.
Stripped threads of that diameter are bastards to repair.
