Default Regular oil or motorcycle oil

I went and bought some castrol gtx 10-40, and was wondering if this is ok, or do I need motorcycle specific oil?? Also, when cold should I be in the middle of the sight glass or towards the upper line? Thanks in advance...

You should be in the middle of the sight glass when you have run it long enough to build oil pressure.

As for the gtx- DO NOT use it if it has an additive called molybendum

It's an anti friction additive that will mess up your clutch. Otherwise it should be fine.

I think the additive JP is talking about has an Energy Conserving label on the bottle.

Like JP said you should be in the middle of the sight glass with the bike upright, not of the kick stand.

Do not use car oil. Get yourself some motorcycle specific oil.

Yes, any oil w/ the "energy conserving" label will make that clutch slip

For peace of mind.....take the guessing out of it and get motorcycle specific.

I use Pro Honda GN4 4-Stroke Motor Oil 10W-40

Also to be safe just make sure the bottle was packaged in 2010 or later. back a year or two ago there was some formula change that wasn't good. But I think that was 2008... I forgot which but it changed back immediately. Use a 2010 or newer bottle and you will love it.
