Default Radiator fan

At what temp should the radiator fan turn on? Noticed the temp creeping up in slow traffic. Pulled over and the guage was sitting about 108 when the fan came on. The fan was then going on and off intermittently for approx 30 secs to a minute. Is this a potential thermostat issue? Or is this normal when the fan is in operation?

Sounds like normal operation. The fan is controlled by a Thermo-Switch (item 19 on the page below) and works independently of the Thermostat. If your bike was low on coolant, that could cause overheating and poor cooling, which in turn would cause the fan to go on and off a lot. The key is does the engine start to get cooler when the fan kicks on while sitting in traffic? If it is, then it's probably fine.

Mine is slightly higher than Doc's but close to the 108c mark (227f).

My fan kicks on at around 227f as well. Is there anything that would explain the difference between one F4i fan kicking on at 220f versus 227f?

Manufacturing differences in the thermo switch. It's a mechanical device and that is probably within the tolerance specified. So long as the temperature starts to go down each time the fan turns on, then you're ok.

I agree with Mr. Dirt about tolerances and if it is cooling there is nothing to worry about.

I'll do some searching. There is a thread here about a replacement sensor that will turn the fan on earlier. I'll be back shortly...

They're not cheap ($46.99) and I can't find the one that is mentioned for $8-ish... 1983 Nissan Pulsar 1.6L engine.

Wow damn those prices have gone up! I bought the Duralast SW524 for $39 from Autozone couple years back now I see that it's $47. Wish my paycheck would go up the same rate.
Still worth it imo my fan used to kick in at around 229F now it kicks in at 214F, really saved my butt during the summer. (literally)

Its supposed to come on at 227 and turn off at 220 fyi. You aren't [technically] overheating until 250.
