Default Quick Question?

A buddy of mine has a cbr600f4i that needs the rear tire replaced. Somehow he was given a rear tire (Dunlop) but it is a different size (190/50/17). I have replaced the rear tire on my bike so I offered to help him out. I was thinking this tire might be too big to mount on his rim but I wanted to check with you guys first. I have a busa and this is the same tire that I have on the back of my bike and it just seems like it would be too big for him to have on his bike. By the way, his bike is completely stock, including the rims. I appreciated any advice you guys can give me. Thanks!!!
Chad

This might fit as the stock is a 180 55 17. Check the manual or the tire chart on the swing arm/chain guard. Or call a service shop to make sure.

A buddy of mine has that same tire (190/50/17) mounted on his 01 F4i and never has any problems. He's had that set up for years. I've heard it changes handling qualities a bit but he's never had an issue.

Well, I think we might go ahead and put it on. He doesn't usually ride his bike all that hard so I don't think the handling issues will affect him...as long as it isn't a gigantic change. If anyone has any other opinions let me know...thanks again guys!!!

Default RE: Quick Question?

i would stick with a 180 rear, because i read in a magazine that upgrading to a larger rear on a sport bike significantly decreases cornering abilities. The reason this is because stock the bike is set up with a certain weight balance. Such as when making a turn the bikes center of gravitiy is in the right position so that the bike has the ability to lean all the way over. now when upgrading to a 190 it may not sound like much but you have to take in account that the tire is wider and i also believe taller. The rim size is the same but the crown on the tire i believe is different. You may not notice a difference, but from what ive read upgrading is not a smart move if your riding it other than the drag strip. And plus these bike have gone through years of engineering and stock the bike is balanced, so by changing to a bigger rear tire, the bike balance could be affected.

I heard it gives you worse handling to put a bigger tire on there

Well we put it on and it went fine. He didn't notice any handling difference, but then again he doesn't ride his bike hard at all. This tire is just a temporary fix until he orders both a new front and a rear tire to put on. Thanks again guys for all your advice!
